Go2linux has written an opinion good article on the important of Composite Project for Linux (formerly kown as Compiz and Beryl). I`m not 100 % agree with ggarron opinion that this project will be a good magnet to pull current XP users into Linux. I’m more incline that the composite project will pull frustrated Vista users, particularly Vista Home Basic Edition. To cut price down, some notebook manufacturers are shipping new notebooks preinstalled with Vista Home Basic. To further cut price these notebooks are equipped with poor performance integrated 3d cards. Those notebooks won’t be able to run Aero (Vista 3d Desktop Effect) even if the user upgraded to Vista Home Premium. These frustrated users will eventually pick up Linux to exploit the 3d Desktop. My ancient Dell 700M is able to run 100% Beryl features even with integrated Intel video accelerator and 512 Mb RAM. I’ll be posting video of my current Beryl setup on Dell 700M in few days for your viewing pleasures. For those who are still in love with Microsoft, u should try Ubuntu with 3d Desktop and tell me what u think.
