Encyclopedia of Life

Free and available online is new trend of information nowadays. While wikipedia is a successful example of that trend, a new emerging website called Encyclopedia of Life (EOL) will bring you new taste of the same trend. Originating from Harvard, this ultimate project will document every Earth’s known species. Yeah, that’s including you, Homo sapiens. At the time of this entry, EOL is not ready yet but u can see the vision where the site is heading. EOL will start sometime end of this year, but the actual authenticated, users ready site will be only accomplished on mid 2008. Unlike wikipedia where the authenticities of information’s are sometime doubtful, the EOL`s source of information will be authenticated by scientist so that we as users will have some sort or authoritative information. For those who love information, this site will be another peripheral brain for you. Below is an excerpt from EOL`s FAQ.

Ultimately, the Encyclopedia will serve as an online reference source and database for every one of the 1.8 million species that are named and known on this planet, as well as all those later discovered and described. Encyclopedia of Life will be used as both a teaching and a learning tool, helping scientists, educators, students, and the community at large gain a better understanding of this planet and all who inhabit it.With a Wikipedia-style Web page detailing each organism’s genome, geographic distribution, phylogenetic position, habitat, and ecological relationships, organizers hope the EOL will ultimately serve as a global beacon for biodiversity and conservation.
