Now u dont need any invitation to register for new gmail account. But u need a handphone though.

Control your web via IMified
A new service to control your various web applications called IMified has been launched! Few web applications such as Google Calendar, Blogger, Backpack, 30Boxes, Wordpress, MovableType and TypePad can be controlled from your favourite IM client. Currently it works for YM, Google Talk , MSN and AOL.
